The Lake Series · Lake Joseph, Muskoka

Muskoka Fine Art Photography

The Lake Series was made on Lake Joseph, in the Muskoka lakes of Ontario, over one summer of early mornings. Every morning began the same way: up before dawn, to see whether the mist had formed on the water.

It finally came on the last day of summer. First Light was taken as the sun rose through it and a fishermen’s boat drifted into the frame. Minutes before, the light on the water had already shown itself in Morning Mist on Lake Joseph. Minutes after, turning around, the same light appeared again from a distance in Sunrise on Lake Joseph.

Two views of one morning

At SCOPE Art Show in 2025, a viewer noticed that the small boat in First Light can also be seen, far off, in Sunrise on Lake Joseph. The two prints were taken minutes apart, and they hang together as a diptych.

The boathouses

Along the shore of Lake Joseph stand its boathouses: quintessential, timeless and classic. They don’t make them like they used to. On the mornings of the flights back to Toronto, a seaplane warming up before take-off caught the same early light in Landing Light on Lake Joseph.
